Financial Benefits of ETH Pioneer Fully Funded Fellowship:
The Pioneer Fellowship 2023-24 in Switzerland, as part of the ETH Pioneer Fellowship Program, will cover all expenses for the selected candidates. The successful applicants will receive a lump sum of 150,000 CHF to cover their salary costs and other expenses associated with supporting their project. The salary level for each applicant will be determined based on their level of education and the expected costs associated with their project. Pioneer Fellows will be employed on a grant as scientific employees at ETH (Wissenschaftliche Mitarbeitende). The fellowship grant amount is fixed at 150,000 CHF and does not depend on the number of applicants or their level of education. Additionally, it cannot be supplemented by other research funds or professorships. Combining the fellowship grant with other external funds, such as prize money or Innosuisse funds, is allowed. The Pioneer Fellowship grant cannot be combined with other personal grants that are linked to an employment contract, such as the BRIDGE Proof of Concept grant.
Benefits:
In addition to salary expenses, the fellowship should cover most aspects of your project. This includes
- The fellowship should cover expenses related to equipment and project-specific consumables or materials.
- The fellowship should also cover measurement costs at facilities such as FIRST, ScopeM, and EPIC.
- The fellowship should also cover software license costs for specialized software that is not currently covered by the research group.
- The fellowship should cover expenses associated with pre-clinical trials.
- The fellowship should cover outsourcing expenses, such as the cost of hiring external consultants, writing websites or software, and preparing market reports, among others.
Travel/Field Expenses and Industry Fairs:
- The fellowship should cover expenses associated with industry engagement or partnership events (e.g., BioEurope, Hannover Messe), customer visits, presentations to investors, and other related activities.
- All expenses covered by the fellowship are exclusively intended for the project and cannot be used for personal purposes.
- To justify the expenses covered by the fellowship, all receipts must be submitted to the Finance Department.
- For a single candidate, a direct grant from CAS ETH can cover the tuition fee of CHF 9’200 for the Entrepreneurial Leadership in Technology Ventures program (CAS ELTV), as enrollment in the program is mandatory.
- If a team of two people applies, the enrollment of a second candidate for the Entrepreneurial Leadership in Technology Ventures program (CAS ELTV) is optional. If they choose to enroll, ieLab will cover 50% of the tuition fee.
Eligibility Criteria:
- To be eligible, candidates must hold a master’s or doctoral degree from ETH Zurich.
- The Pioneer Fellowship program is open to teams of 1-2 entrepreneurs who aim to commercialize the outcomes of their research (master’s or doctoral thesis or postdoctoral research) conducted at ETH.
- There is a business case with great potential.
- The company is not currently involved in a project.
- The host professor at ETH fully supports both the project and the team.

Application Process:
The candidate is required to write the application and provide a letter of support from their host professor. The host professor must have a position at ETH for the entire duration of the proposed Pioneer Fellowship and must provide support and infrastructure from their professorship without any charge.
The application must contain the following steps:
- The application must include a brief project summary that covers planned activities, the market situation, and innovation potential. This summary should not include any confidential information.
- A detailed idea description is required, based on research results obtained during a master’s or doctoral thesis completed at ETH Zurich. The application must include some evidence of market relevance, a basic business model with initial details on a commercialization strategy, and technical and market analysis. Patent applications and software (IP) must be made available for licensing to Pioneer Fellowships, as well as future spin-offs, etc. the application should emphasize innovative aspects related to efficiency and customer benefits of the product or service. The application must include milestones and a more detailed explanation of expenses. Expected results should be clearly defined.
- The application must provide a detailed list of the financial requirements.
- The candidate’s full CV, which should include a list of relevant publications and a brief overview of their career goals, must be included in the application.
- Any potential conflicts of interest (if applicable) must be disclosed to both the candidate and the host professor.
- A signed letter of support from the host processor is required, which should explain why and how they wish to support the candidate and evaluate the proposed project idea. The letter should also describe the infrastructure that will be made accessible.
