The Vanier Scholarship supports doctoral degrees (Ph.D.), combined MA/Ph.D. or MD/Ph.D. programs, and Masters leading to Ph.D. programs. Funded by the Government of Canada, this scholarship allows recipients to study at any Canadian university. The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship provides $50,000 annually for a maximum duration of three years.

Scholarship Benefits
- Scholars will receive a $50,000 grant annually for three years.
- Applicants have the opportunity to pursue their Ph.D. at their preferred Canadian institution.
- The funding for their studies will be fully or partially covered based on their academic achievements, research proposal, and leadership qualities.
Eligibility Criteria of the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship 2025:
Applicants for the Vanier CGS in Canada must meet the following criteria:
- Applicants must be either Canadian citizens or international students enrolled in Canadian institutions.
- Applicants must be enrolled full-time in a Ph.D. program at a Canadian institution.
- Candidates must be nominated by a university receiving the Vanier CGS quota (last updated July 1).
- Applicants must be pursuing their first Ph.D. program.
- Applicants must not receive fellowships or scholarships from CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC for any other doctoral program.
- Candidates must have a first-class average in the last two years of their studies.
- Students pursuing joint professional degree programs (MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, JD/PhD) are eligible, but only the Ph.D. portion will be funded.
- Candidates must include a significant research component in their research proposal.
- Applicants must not be faculty members at the institution with a Vanier quota or any other institution. They must be granted leave for the Ph.D. program to be eligible.
- Applicants must be full-time students. Part-time enrollment is allowed for students with disabilities or family responsibilities.
- For part-time students, two months of study will be considered equivalent to one month for full-time students.
- Canadian Federal Government employees are eligible only if they take unpaid leave from their government position.
- Candidates who meet the eligibility criteria can apply for both Vanier Scholarships and agency-specific Ph.D. scholarships. If selected for more than one, they must choose one grant.

- If the institution returns your application to you on ResearchNet, it will include a revised date. You can edit and re-submit your application.
- If your application is selected for nomination, you will receive an automated acknowledgment email from ResearchNet.
- If you do not receive any email, contact the institution to check the status of your application.
