Canada just opened one of its most competitive graduate funding opportunities. The Canada Graduate Research Scholarships – Master’s (CGRS-M) program is now accepting applications for 2027.

The scholarship offers CAD $27,000 for one year of research-based study. It covers health sciences, engineering, natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities.

What makes this different from most scholarships? One application can reach up to three Canadian universities, including McGill University. The Government of Canada backs the funding through three federal research agencies.

If you plan to pursue a research master’s in Canada, this is the opportunity to target right now.

    What Is the CGRS-M Program?

The Canada Graduate Research Scholarships – Master’s program supports students who show outstanding academic records and strong research potential.

Three of Canada’s federal granting agencies run this programme jointly:

    • NSERC – Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council
    • SSHRC – Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council
    • CIHR – Canadian Institutes of Health Research

Students do not apply to each agency separately. They submit one centralized application through Canada’s Research Portal and select the agency that matches their research area.

This structure saves time and increases reach. One application, three possible universities, and government-backed recognition — all at once.

    How This Scholarship Works

During the application, you identify which federal agency aligns with your research:

    • Health sciences falls under CIHR
    • Natural sciences and engineering fall under NSERC
    • Social sciences and humanities fall under SSHRC

You also select up to three eligible Canadian universities where you want to hold the scholarship. McGill University is among the participating institutions.

This single-application model is one of the most efficient routes to federal graduate funding in Canada.

    Financial Benefits

    Successful applicants receive:

    • CAD $27,000 in scholarship funding
    • One full year of research support
    • Federal government recognition from a leading granting agency
    • The opportunity to conduct research at a top Canadian university

The award is non-renewable. However, holding a CGRS-M award strengthens your profile for future doctoral funding competitions.

    Who Can Apply

The CGRS-M programme has clear eligibility requirements. You qualify if you are:

    • A Canadian citizen
    • A Canadian permanent resident
    • A Protected Person under Canada’s Immigration and Refugee Protection Act
    • Enrolled in, admitted to, or planning to apply for a full-time eligible graduate programme at a Canadian university holding a CGRS-M allocation
    • Holding a first-class academic average in the last two completed years of study
    • Applying for the first time — previous CGRS-M recipients are not eligible
    • Entering an eligible master’s or qualifying doctoral pathway

Each applicant may submit only one CGRS-M application per competition year. Plan carefully before submitting.

    Eligible Fields of Research

The programme supports a wide range of academic disciplines. Your research proposal can fall within any of the following areas:

    • Engineering and Biomedical Engineering
    • Health Sciences and Medicine
    • Natural Sciences and Environmental Sciences
    • Computer Science
    • Social Sciences and Humanities
    • Interdisciplinary Research

Students with interdisciplinary projects should identify the primary research domain before selecting the granting agency. The agency selection matters for how your application gets reviewed.

    Additional Funding for Indigenous Scholars

The Canadian government provides supplementary awards for eligible Indigenous applicants through the Indigenous Scholars Awards and Supplements Initiative.

If your application receives an “Offered” or “Alternate” status, you may also receive:

    AwardValue
    Indigenous Scholars AwardCAD $27,000
    Indigenous Scholars SupplementCAD $5,000

Funding depends on available programme allocations. Eligible applicants should indicate their Indigenous identity during the application process.

Additional Funding for Black Student Researchers

The Government of Canada has reserved additional CGRS-M awards specifically for Black student researchers.

Applicants who voluntarily self-identify as Black within the application and give consent may become eligible for additional awards. This applies to applications that reach Alternate status during the competition.

This initiative reflects Canada’s broader commitment to equity and inclusion in graduate research funding.

    Application Deadline

The deadline to submit your application for the Canada Graduate Research Scholarships – Master’s (CGRS-M) 2027 is:

    December 1, 2026, at 8:00 p.m.

Submit through the official Canada Research Portal. Late applications are not accepted. Prepare your documents well in advance.

    Why This Scholarship Matters

Canada consistently ranks among the top destinations for graduate research. McGill University alone holds a global reputation in science, medicine, engineering, and the humanities.

The CGRS-M programme does more than fund your studies. It signals to the academic community that you are a researcher worth investing in. That recognition opens doors well beyond the scholarship year itself.

For students who are serious about research careers in Canada, applying for CGRS-M is not just an option. It is a strategic move.

The deadline is December 1, 2026. Start your application early, build a strong research proposal, and submit through the official Canada Research Portal.
